Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty Character Creation - START HERE!!!

((DISCLAIMER: You will find your Character Sheet in your profile. There, you can edit in all of the appropriate information you will create using these instructions. There will be simple math, and it is highly recommended that you use a pen and paper as you work through the process. Also, it is suggested that you keep both this thread and your character sheet open in different tabs while you work. You may also want to open the different links to further information on this page in new tabs. Please follow these instructions carefully and PM the Story Teller with any questions you may have.))

Before you enter the world of Avatar, you must create a character. However, the character creation process involves more than just saying, "I want to be a..." You need to know who your character is and what she/he has the potential to do, her/his likes and dislikes, his/her background and more. This thread, and the subsequent threads to follow, provides a step-by-step plan for discovering these facets of your character, giving you the chance to create a unique character you will enjoy playing.

Character creation starts with a basic concept. After deciding on that, you assign the character's normal and Avatar Traits to determine what she/he can do, then fill in the details of her/his personality and life. You should create a character who is interesting for you to play, for your friends' characters to interact with and for your Story Teller to incorporate into the story. Although your character will indeed become one of the most powerful people in the world, the goal is not to make the ultimate superbeing, capable of destroying cities with a thought; if you easily trounce everyone you meet, your series is likely to be extremely dull. Indeed, characters with weaknesses are far more interesting; vast power is all the more poignant when contrasted with human foibles.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP ONE: Concept

Post by Story Teller Wed Apr 20, 2016 4:40 pm

You begin by formulating a basic concept for your character. You don't need to know all the details of her/his life just yet; you need to have a general feel for who she/he is. You can add specifics later on in the process; right now you're just interested in the basics.
You need to determine two things at this stage: who you are and what you're like.

STATUS

Every character in the world of Avatar can be divided into one of two categories: bender or non-bender. Of course, benders are then further divided among themselves. Your Status shows which category your character falls into, and will help you choose appropriately in the next steps to come.
You may choose from the following:

  • Airbender
  • Earthbender
  • Firebender
  • Non-bender
  • Waterbender

For a full breakdown on benders and their many different sub-categories, click here.
For more on non-benders, click here.

NATIONALITY

We all come from somewhere. In the world of Avatar, this can be very important. Your Status will help to influence your decision here. For example, a waterbender from the Fire Nation would stick out like a sore thumb, whereas one in the Earth Kingdom would be more likely due to the Foggy Swamp. It goes without saying, of course, that each of the 4 types of benders has a designated homeland.
In modern times, during the age of Avatar Korra, it is no longer so rare to find benders of all kinds sharing the same space, at least not in the United Republic of Nations. It also is worth mentioning here that airbenders do not currently all hail from the temples their people once populated, but rather come from all different Nationalities.
Non-benders will find full freedom in this choice, as they are from all over the world and do not hail from one specific region.
You may choose from the following:

  • Earth Kingdom
  • Fire Nation
  • Northern Water Tribe
  • Southern Water Tribe
  • United Republic of Nations

You can include a specific hometown or place of birth later on in your character's Bio.
For more details on the four Nations, and the many cities of the world, click here.

CLASS

Before we start thinking about everything your character can do, we have to remember that they are a person of their own. She/he has a normal life before they start running off on adventures. You must decide what she/he does, how they live and what is unique about them. Their Class can describe their profession or interests. The following Classes are suggestions; if none of them fits the idea you have in mind for your character, feel free to create your own and submit a request in a PM to the Story Teller.
Characters are free to pursue multiple hobbies and interests, and their Class should only reflect their most encompassing one. For example, a man who farms and sells cabbages would be torn between Farmer or Merchant, but since he spends more time selling his cabbages, and enjoys the profit he makes more than the farming itself, he chooses Merchant.

For the full list of Classes, click here.

ALIGNMENT

This should be easy for veteran roleplayers to grasp.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Avatar10

Choose your alignment carefully. EXP will be rewarded for playing your alignment correctly and consistently.
As always, there is good, neutral, and evil, and then lawful, true (neutral), and chaotic.
For a full breakdown on alignments, check out this page.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP TWO: Select Attributes

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 12:43 am

ATTRIBUTES

The nine Attributes are innate potentials represented by numerical ratings. These traits are the basis for all of your character's capabilities. Each character's Attributes are rated on a scale of 1 to 5.
1 is poor, 2 is average, and 5 is the peak of human potential.
Characters start with a rating of 1 in each of the nine Attributes, which may then be improved upon by spending Attribute points on a one-for-one basis.

Attributes are divided into three areas:

  • Physical
  • Social
  • Mental

You must prioritize these three Attribute categories, determining one area in which your character is particularly adept (primary), one in which they're fairly average (secondary), and one in which they're weak (tertiary). You spend seven Attribute points in you primary area, five Attribute points in your secondary area, and three Attribute points in your tertiary area. Allocate the points within each group however you see fit. If an Attribute ends up lower than you'd like, don't worry. You may improve it later with bonus points or experience.

Any element of your character's concept may suggest the placement of Attribute points. A travelling poet or scientific prodigy might have strong Mental Attributes, while a scheming con man probably has high Social Attributes.

For a full list of all Attributes and what they represent, click here.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP THREE: Select Abilities

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 12:59 am

ABILITIES

As Attributes are your character's innate qualities, Abilities are the skills and talents that she/he has developed in their life. Abilities are rated from 1 (rudimentary) to 5 (superior). Abilities begin with ratings of 0, not 1 as Attributes do. You have 23 points to spend on Abilities as you choose. You may distribute Ability points on a one-for-one basis however you see fit, although individual Ability ratings cannot exceed 3 during character creation.

Concept is more important when choosing Abilities. A street thug probably won't be skilled at mingling in high society, while a zoologist wouldn't know much about heavy weaponry. On the other hand, choosing seemingly odd Abilities can enhance your character concept.

For the full list of Abilities, click here.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP FOUR: Backgrounds

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:05 pm

BACKGROUNDS

Backgrounds measure your "place" in the Avatar universe. They represent whom you know, who knows you, and what resources you can draw on in times of need. You have seven points to allocate among your character's Backgrounds. Your choices should reflect your character concept.

For the full list of Backgrounds and their benefits, click here.

AFFILIATION

Choosing your Affiliation is not nearly as complicated.
Now that you are more familiar with your character, you may choose a group or organization your character has loyalties to. Keep your character concept in mind here, and don't reach too far outside the realm of reason.

For the full list of organizations in the world of Avatar, click here.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP FIVE: Willpower, Energy, and Bonus Points

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:35 pm

WILLPOWER

Willpower measures the power of convictions and self-control. Your character has a maximum or permanent Willpower rating, on a scale of 1 to 10, which is the theoretical limit of determination. Your character also has a momentary force of will; this current or temporary rating drops as will is exerted (by spending Willpower points) and grows as your character reinforces his/her belief in themselves (by acting true to their Alignment).

Permanent Willpower begins at a base rating of 3, and bonus points may be spent to raise it to a maximum of 10. Temporary Willpower starts every game session or scene equal to your character's permanent score.

ENERGY

Every human being is filled with flowing Energy that gives them life and fuels their everyday activities. Sometimes known as chi, this Energy is what gives an athlete the power to run for miles at high speeds, or a bender the strength to move mountains. The measure of someone's control over this Energy is the Energy Trait. This Trait, more than any other statistic, is a measure of a character's "power."

Characters start with an Energy rating of 1, though you may use bonus points to increase it in the next step, as well as Avatar points in the steps to come. In any event, no character may begin the game with an Energy Trait above 5.

ENERGY POOL

A character's Energy Pool is the total amount of "juice" or fuel they use to power their abilities. Energy Pool is always 20 + (Energy x 2) and increases with your Energy rating.

Energy points are spent from the Energy Pool when using Bending Forms and Skills; the character starts the series with a full Energy Pool.

For the full breakdown on Willpower and Energy, click here.

BONUS POINTS

Bonus Points are used to fill in the blanks left on the character sheet during basic character creation. You have 15 bonus points, and you may spend them on any Attributes, Abilities, Backgrounds, Energy, or Willpower. However, Trait costs vary (see the Character Creation Table).

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP SIX: Avatar Points

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:56 pm

AVATAR POINTS

These points are named such only to distinguish them from the Bonus Points, as they are spent differently.
Beginning characters get 30 Avatar Points, which they can use to increase Energy, buy Attributes, Abilities, and Backgrounds. As with Bonus Points, different Traits and powers cost different amounts of Avatar Points (see the Character Creation Table).

But Avatar Points are also used to purchase one final important thing...

BENDING FORMS and SKILLS

You will be using your 30 Avatar Points to purchase these powers. If you are a non-bender, the Bending Forms will be strictly off-limits to you. Benders should be mindful of their Status, and remember that they are limited only to the Bending Forms of their specific type. Some sub-forms of bending will not be available at character creation.

Bending Forms and Skills are divided into three levels:

  • Basic
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

All characters start with two free level 1 basic Bending Forms or Skills.
Though benders can learn Skills, they cannot be claimed as one of your free basics.

For the full list of Airbending Forms, click here.
For the full list of Earthbending Forms, click here.
For the full list of Firebending Forms, click here.
For the full list of Waterbending Forms, click here.

Character Creation - START HERE!!! Empty STEP SEVEN: Finishing Touches

Post by Story Teller Sun Apr 24, 2016 10:20 pm

BIO

Now that you have the points and traits out of the way, you can personalize your creation and make them uniquely yours. The more details you work out, the more depth your character has. While they have no direct impact on the rules, these details make it easier for both you and your Story Teller to know who your character is and how they fit into the series.

How old are you?
Who were you parents?
Have you always been different?
What are your quirks?
Who is important in your life?
What do you own?
How do you perceive other people?
What are your motivations?

These are just some examples of questions to get your creativity flowing.

Adding a Bio to your character sheet is also completely optional. However, to reward players for putting in the extra work, EXP will be rewarded after character creation for paying extra attention to the details, starting at 15 EXP and increasing with length, quality, and details.

A Bio can only be submitted for EXP once. You cannot add to your Bio later to earn more.

PICTURE

To give the Story Teller, players, and yourself a clearer image of your character, and to better assist with the fantasy of the roleplay itself, you may choose to submit a picture of your character to be displayed on your character sheet. You may also choose to add this picture to your forum signature, if you so wish.

Players that submit a picture of their character will receive 5 EXP after character creation.

NAME

Here we are, at the final step. Some would say it is the easiest. Others would completely disagree.
If you need any help choosing a name, I highly recommend going here.
This page will give you a nearly limitless resource of names, including the ability to sort them by nationality and gender. Of course, most names in the Avatar world are Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, etc.), but many others are also completely made up, or simple names like Jet or June.

You have total freedom here, and with this final step, your character is complete.

After approval by the Story Teller in a PM, you will be able to join threads and play through the eyes of your character.

Your character sheet will only ever be visible to yourself and the Story Teller, and only modifiable by the same.
A separate thread exists to compile all the player's character information that is public knowledge.

Be sure to check out all the forums in the Game Omnibus to brush up on your Bending Forms/Skills, Abilities, Backgrounds, and how to spend EXP.
